windblown goodness

April 7th, 2008

I skied the last four days on the mountain and have to say the conditions are unreal.  The wind has been blowing and the snow is as good as Mammoth has to offer.  Utah might be known for its light powder, but no place can beat Mammoth when it comes to windblown.  I woke up Thursday morning to a bluebird day with no wind and morning temperatures in the 20’s.  The snow had held up great from the little bit of snow we got the weekend before.  No wind but great variable snow conditions up top and no one on the mountain.  Friday through Sunday the wind kept picking up and the snow just kept getting softer and smoother.  If you like skiing fast, smooth steeps now is the time to be in Mammoth.  On Lincoln mountain the Avy Chutes have been holding up great and with only a few weeks left until Little Eagle and Canyon Lodge close, get it while you can.  The lower mountain still had decent coverage but with warmer temperatures the snow at the base areas has been getting pretty slushy.  We are expecting cooler temperatures and the potential for snow flurries during this week and then an above average temps for this coming weekend.  Enjoy the great snow while it’s here.  Before you know it, it will be bike season.   See you on the hill.

Brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!!!

January 16th, 2008

Lots of cold temperatures coming our way for the holiday weekend! Dress warmly on the hill and around town – although we are not expecting any precipice, we will still feel the cold air. Snow conditions are great right now – both on Mammoth and June ( if it feels too crowded this weekend June is always a great option) Also tune into Channel 72 and catch some of the great skiing and snowboarding footage from this weeks Freeride World Tour on the mountain. and mark your calendar for the finals next week on McGee mountain. The plan is to run helicopters to the top and drop off the remaining qualifiers – We plan to be there with our lawn chairs and binoculars.

Some great skiing

January 10th, 2008

I managed to get away from the computer for a little bit yesterday to sample some of the lovely new snow that blanketed Mammoth Mountain over the past week. I started early, skied till late and left exhausted and with a big smile on my face. The snow was fantastic (little wind blown in places but thats ok) and I can happily say that just about the entire mountain is skiable now. Get out there and enjoy it everyone! The top on 1-9-08

Night of Lights!!

January 10th, 2008

After a really mixed day here in town – sun in the morning, a warm up and rain midday, the skies are supposed to clear for the weekend. I would definitely plan on coming up this weekend – expect a fair amount of crowds now that the snow has finally arrived and the sun is out. A lot of people left early last week because of the storm and an anxious to make up for lost time. Footloose, Wave Rave and Mammoth Mtn are hosting the World Freeride Tour – riders that have pre-qualified can pick up their registration packets at Footloose starting Sunday at noon until 10 pm. Anyone interested in watching the event should show up at Chair 14 by 10am. You can watch the show form the sundeck, listen to some great music and watch some world class skiers and riders. Also, don’t forget the return of the Night of Lights at Canyon Lodge on Saturday night at 5pm. This event has been sorely missed in Mammoth over the last few years and we are stoked to see it return.

Still Snowing!!

January 8th, 2008

After a bluebird day yesterday, another storm is rolling in the Wednesday. conditions in town and on the mountain right now are blustery, cold and snowy. But this does appear to be the last in the series of storms for a while. The snow is cold and dry – there will be some great face shots for those who plan early!! The weekend promises to be clear and sunny. See you on the slopes!!
