Just got back in from an incredible morning over at Convict Lake on one of our new stand up paddleboard rentals. Nothing like experiencing the serenity of an early morning paddle across the lake without a breath of wind. If you haven’t tried it yet – you are missing out! Best places so far are Convict Lake, Horseshoe, Silver Lake , Grant Lake and June Lake. Easy access, sandy beach entry and little boat traffic. Do yourself a favor and set aside some time this summer to try out this new sport..

The snow is finally starting to clear off some of the lower bike trails around Mammoth Lakes. The Shady Rest/Knolls area is completely open as well as the Mammoth Rock Trail as of last week. The Mammoth Mountain bike park is opening today with approximately 9 trails cleared for riding. There is still quite a bit of snow still up towards main lodge, but trails such as Uptown, Lower Paper Route, Big Ring, Shotgun, and Juniper are incredibly buffed out. The trail crew at the bike park has done a great job at clearing and raking out the trails that are open. Good job guys! The weather has been great as of late and the days are long so hopefully mother nature will continue to cooperate and help open up some more riding trails soon. For those of you into road riding, the Eastside Velo Club will be having their annual Bridgeport ride on Sunday. For details on the Bridgeport ride check out their website at www.eastsidevelo.org. Whatever activity you have planned have a great weekend.

Spring has been unseasonably cool which has most of us pining for warm-consistently warm-weather. But for winter diehards the conditions have been remarkably conducive to skiing. May 11th dawned with a winter storm creeping eastward after dropping a foot and a half on the mountain leaving spotty clouds and morning temperatures in the low 20’s. Skiing was UN-believable…knee deep or better in the Paranoids and consistent into Saint Anton. Run after run. Pure winter snow until late in the afternoon. Upper Dry Creek, Dave’s, Climax…whew! How many ski areas can claim great powder days in May? Only one that I can think of…Mammoth Mountain!

It is another beutiful month of March in Mammoth Lakes. We had some excellent powder skiing the first week. One person I was skiing with even told me she had the best powder run of her life lats wednesday. Then we had a few days of sun and great windbuff skiing. Mammoth snow turns into magic when the wind blows. Another storm just passed through this Friday. Fresh snow for the weekend. It looks like this next week will be warm and sunny, the first little taste of spring. With this current snowpack we should ski until June. Many more happy turns ahead.

The skies opened up and snow started to fall around 1p.m. today. Forecasters are projecting the town of Mammoth will get another 1-2 feet tonight through tomorrow with another storm to follow in the next couple of days. The snow is falling straight down right now with hardly a hint of wind. With the few feet of fresh we got in the middle of the week and the projected storm for tonight the weekend should remain soft and powdery. So for those of you on the way up take it slow there will be plenty of snow for everyone this weekend. The way the pattern is setting up it is looking like March has the potential to be a very wet month. So for those of you who thought summer was right around the corner with such a dry February, it might be farther off than you thought. Winter is way to short anyway, even in the Eastern Sierra.
